ORDER OF THE KNIGHT OF St. JAMES

Following the example of the templat knight, about the year1.158, a group of thirteen Castilian knights decided to do vote of protecting the pilgrims who were going to Santiago de Compostela. Sme years later, in 1.171, the knights decided to take monastic votes under San agustin´s rule, and later they obtain te recognition of the Pope Alejandro III.

Their purposes were exclusively military having their headquarters in Montalbán (Aragón). The knights of santiago only admitted nobles into their brotherhood. From the middle of the XIIIth century the Crown was intervening directly in the appointment of the grand masters and from 1.485 the Order Grand Master was the king.

ORDER OF THE TEUTONIC KNIGHTS

The tradition associates to the foundation of the Order the establishment of a German hospital in Jerusalem.About 1.191, the Pope recognizes them as religious order under the name of Hospital of saint Mary of the Germans from Jerusalem. In a beginning it was of medical an charitable character, but in 1.198 it assumes also a military character. It is a this time when born the Order of the Teutonic knights.
